Part L Building Regs

Part L of the Building Regulations aims to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, thereby reducing carbon emissions.
A holistic approach has been adopted, taking into account the complete fabric of buildings.

Part L aims to conserve fuel and power by;

1.     Limiting heat loss through the building fabric
2.     Providing energy efficient heating systems with effective controls
3.     Providing the owner with sufficient control information to eliminate wastage

With renewable energy growing in importance and availability, electric heating is becoming an increasingly attractive option to developers.
Below are some of the benefits of electric heating;

·       Electricity is 100% efficient – eliminating wastage.
·       Electric heaters are simple and cheap to install – unlike gas and oil
·       Electric heating appliances can be installed anywhere with a power supply
·       Electric heating systems can be used with low electricity tariffs helping to improve SAP ratings

Below are some reasons why Heat Electric water filled radiators will make life easier for builders and developers to comply with the challenges of Part L.

Part L states that heating systems for dwellings with a total useable floor area up to and over 150 metre squared shoud be divided into at least 2 zones with independent control.
Heat Electric radio frequency enabled radiators  can be supplied with radio frequency control units.
The RF unit is 7-day, 24 hr programmable, and allows for up to 7 radiators to be controlled as a group. Multiple controllers enable the property to be zoned therefore fulfilling this requirement.

Part L states that heating systems must be installed with zone and timing controls. Heat Electric Timer radiators are supplied with an integrated 24hr programmable timer and thermostat.
Allowing each radiator to be programmed individually and users to control room temperatures independently.  This feature enables the property heating to respond on a room-by-room basis,
complying with the requirement.
<>The control features also lead to improved heating controllability and energy efficiency as dwellings can be split into zones. This avoids the wastage of excessive or unnecessary heat.

<>The flexible and sophisticated controllability of Heat Electric radiators result in energy efficient heating, leading to lower carbon emissions from the dwelling.

Heat loss through pipes must also be reduced in dwellings. Heat Electric radiators require no pipe-work and so heat loss is drastically reduced in this respect.

Heat Electric radiators can be used with the low cost energy tariff Economy 10 helping to lower carbon emissions.   With Heat Electric radiators no flue is required unlike gas/oil heating systems.
Where provision for a flue is required, this must be acceptable to the Planning Officer and in relation to Part L, the flue must be clear of any windows.
This is particularly difficult for apartments. Heat Electric radiators therefore completely removes this issue.

Part L states that heating systems must be provided with operating and maintenance controls.
All Heat  electric radiators are supplied with user-friendly operating instructions, meeting this requirement.

Heat Electric radiators recognised by the British Research Establishment (BRE)

Given the unique nature of the product, electric water filled radiators were not included as a category in the original SAP documentation.

However the BRE have now added a footnote under the latest 9.82 (August 08) update of the SAP 2005 specification' detailing which values to attribute to electric water filled radiators ,
when calculating ratings.http://projects.bre.co.uk/sap2005/

The footnote in question is in Table 4a on page 135 of the PDF. The category of 'electric water filled radiators' will be added to the SAP software itself when the new version becomes available in 2009,
further simplifying the specification process.

Additional Information

Electric Heaters

Electric heaters are electrical appliances that change electrical energy into heat. Electric heaters consist of an electrical resistor. There are various types of electric heaters, and nearly all of them use the same physical principle to produce heat. However, they differ from each other in the way they deliver heat to the environment. Radiative electric heaters generally produce the most intense form of heat through a heating element within. Convection heaters heat the air through a heating element within by means of conduction. Fan electric heaters are a form of convection electric heaters, which include electric fans to speed up airflow.

Electric Heating

The effect of electric heating is mainly related to the production of electricity. The environmental impact of electric heating is actually dependant on the kind of electricity it consumes. Electric heating has a greater effect on the environment than heat pumps that provide the same amount of heat. Heat pumps are capable of providing larger amounts of heat, but the heat produced by electric heating is better. However, direct electric heating is generally not considered ecologically pleasant because most electricity uses fossil fuels, with up to two-thirds of energy in the fuel being lost at the power stations and in transmission losses.

Electric Radiators

Electric radiators consist of an electric resistance unit that is fixed in a reflector. Heat is generated when an electric current passes through this unit. A substantial portion of this heat is transferred from electric radiators by radiation. Initially, electric radiators were also known as ‘wet` system electric radiators. Electric radiators can be simply plugged into the usual wall sockets. For electric radiators to work efficiently, you can spur wire electric radiators into existing storage heating sockets, and then take the wire back to a unique control box. Professional electric radiator providers should obtain electric radiators for you so that you can have complete guidance about how to use them.

electric wall heater

With the cost of energy bills rising all the time it is becoming increasingly important to all house holds to ensure you are heating your home in the most efficient way possible. When looking at revitalizing your heating it is vital that you get the very best value for your money. To make sure this is the case, then why not get in touch with one of the very best electric wall heater suppliers in the country today. This company can advise you on exactly the right electric wall heater for your needs. This form of radiator is very easy and quick to install, ensuring minimal disruption to your home and lower costs for the installation. The radiator mounts onto unobtrusive wall fixings and is simply plugged into an electrical socket. What could be easier? With virtually no moving this type of electric wall heater radiators are reliable, maintenance free and unlike other systems, do not require annual safety checks.

electrical heaters

It is becoming increasingly popular of modern home builders and renovators to install electrical heaters with in homes instead of the more traditional gas central heating systems. There are many benefits to installing electric radiators - this form of radiator is very easy and quick to install, ensuring minimal disruption to your home and lower costs for the installation. The radiator mounts onto unobtrusive wall fixings and is simply plugged into an electrical socket. These electrical heaters have other benefits over the old style system - a traditional fossil fuel system, can have as much as 30% of the heat produced vented to atmosphere through the flue. As electrical radiator units are independent all power consumed is converted into heat, with you seeing the benefit in your pocket instead of up in smoke. The electrical heaters can also have the individual room temperatures adjusted to suit occupancy ensuring a relaxing living environment. They are also considerably safer, as they do not produce carbon monoxide or any other harmful gases, there is no risk of explosion or danger from poisonous fumes.

Wall mounted electrical heaters

With all house holds trying to tighten their belts, it is becoming more and more important to ensure that you can make savings wherever you can. One area in which significant savings can be made is in your heating bills. Installing wall mounted electrical heaters in your home. These radiators are very easy and quick to install, ensuring minimal disruption to your home and lower costs for the installation. The radiator mounts onto unobtrusive wall fixings and is simply plugged into an electrical socket. What could be easier? These wall mounted electrical heaters have other benefits over the old style system - a traditional fossil fuel system, can have as much as 30% of the heat produced vented to atmosphere through the flue. As electrical radiator units are independent all power consumed is converted into heat, with you seeing the benefit in your pocket instead of up in smoke. With virtually no moving these types of wall mounted electrical heaters are reliable, maintenance free and unlike other systems, do not require annual safety checks. This is an obvious saving when considering the total running cost of an electric system.
